The Door (Gwangju, Korea)

Art creates a door beyond prison wall as a healing space for the unseen women and the unspoken stories.

Art transcends pain and trauma through meaning making where women show strength in resilience. Gwangju as the “city of justice”, celebrates the freedom in prison of women deprived of liberty. This art exhibition opens a creative dialogue to raise their voices through their stories, needlework, embroidery and weaving. The voices of women travelled through their arts to the global stage in art
exhibitions and conferences in New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Kyoto, Busan, and Philippines as a result of years of co-love since 2014 through community healing, and meaning making process. What started as passion project, evolved into a restorative social enterprise as economic support to family of women who served as breadwinners.

Due to COVID-19, all of us were on lockdown, but the women in prison where in triple lockdown which means the women has no chance to meet family and all programs stopped. It was the most challenging and darkest times which
opened the door to let the light in from the crack of darkness. Rosa Zerrudo, artist collaborator, found a new way, as she felt connected to the world through zoom despite the quarantine. She extended her personal experience with zoom workshops similar to opening a prison door.

For the first time, the jail allowed zoom workshops to continue the psychosocial support for women in prison. Around Thirty international artists from USA, Canada, Spain, South Korea, Indonesia, Germany, Papua New Guinea, Australia and Philippines collaborated in solidarity with the struggles of women through zoom workshops during the pandemic at least a hundred times. As an artist response to crisis, Rosa Zerrudo opens the door in democratizing art through socially engaged art process.

Title: In my sleep (Shadow installation)
Materials: bojagi, cardboard, light, hand dyed and painted batik inspired design by Indays

The daily struggle of Inday culminates in silent pain, sleeping in cardboard box while a pillow as only source of comfort becomes a powerful intimate object, a significant witness to all Inday’s dreams, nightmares, stories and tears.

In my sleep (shadow installation)
Jonaseth B. A.

at the end of dusk on the verge of night fall
everybody in panic gather in the roll call
desperately looking for a bed of carton
to squeeze in oneself wherever to sleep on
as bodies lay on cold concrete floor
backbreaking pain is a normal unspoken sore
as if a matrix of body positions in all directions
twist and turns all crooked with no order or caution
eyes stay awake not a blink for endless hours
thinking about the plight of women behind bars
what fate may come in this situation
is there hope in this world that is the question
looking at everybody’s condition
how appalling, you feel sorry for such misfortune
similar to the slaves uncared for and forsaken
waiting for decent unwavering attention not taken
like a herd of calm with no objection
unperturbed waiting for dispensation
families in distress endure to wait and visit
bringing content and delight in the food basket
so before everybody doze off to sleep
in prayers they trust inside their hearts they keep
with faith in God they are in total surrender
in the hope of at least undisturbed slumber

Title: Winged Krus + Altar

Materials: hand embroidered fabric by Indays, recycled banners and bojagi
Altar ni Inday or “Altar of Inday” is a juxtaposition of several elements such as the macramé altar installation, beautifully handmade sculpted vaginas, and inday dolls made by the women artists behind bars resembling the “woman” – woman of resilience. The altar bows to each sacred woman whether scarred as mother (nanay), suffered as a sister (ate), neglected as a grandmother (lola), deprived as an aunt (tita) and isolated as a friend (kaibigan). Women bodies are honored and respected as it transcends the pain while
tears overflow like rain.

Materials: hand embroidered fabric by Indays, recycled banner and bojagi

Recycled hammock of dreams, or “duyan” as the powerful symbol of the mother-child connection captures the essence of the bittersweet ordeal of “mothering behind bars.” Many of the women in prison are mothers, and the story of one woman encapsulates the essence and struggle of a mother.
